Chairman Graves: June Jobs Report "Not Enough"

Washington, DC, Jul 6 -

House Small Business Committee Chairman Sam Graves (R-MO) today issued the following statement after the U.S. Department of Labor reported that 80,000 jobs were created in June while the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 8.2 percent:

“Month after month of weak job growth is just not enough. The American people deserve more,” Graves said. “We need substantial growth that puts people to work. Instead, bipartisan jobs bills are stalled in the Senate, the massive national debt keeps growing, a higher tax burden awaits job creators at the end of the year, health care costs continue to rise and businesses face too many regulatory hurdles.”

“For more than 40 months in a row, unemployment levels have not been below 8 percent. That’s unacceptable,” Graves continued. “Small businesses create more than 60 percent of all new jobs, and they should be a real priority in this jobs climate. Unfortunately, just this week the administration moved backwards in reaching the small business goals for federal contracting. The administration must join our effort to increase contracting opportunities for small firms. They save taxpayers’ money and create jobs.

“The federal government does not create private sector jobs, but we can promote growth by providing the certainty and common sense policies that our job creators need.”
