Washington, Jun 7 -

Committee to Hold Hearings on H-2B Visa Policy, Effects of Federal Strategic Sourcing Initiatives on Small Contractors

The House Small Business Committee, chaired by Rep. Sam Graves (R-MO), today announced the schedule for the week of June 10, 2013:

On Wednesday, June 12th, at 1:00 p.m., the Small Business Subcommittee on Economic Growth, Tax and Capital Access, under the chairmanship of Rep. Tom Rice (R-SC), will conduct a hearing titled The Seasonal Employment Needs of Small Tourism Businesses and H-2B Visa PolicyThe purpose of the hearing is to examine the H-2B visa program and its use by small tourism businesses.

“Many small, seasonal businesses rely on the H-2B visa program when they cannot find enough American workers to meet their needs during peak season,” said Chairman Rice. “Delays by the Department of Labor and the Department of Homeland Security have created a backlog in the H-2B application process, which threatens the labor force that many of our small businesses depend on during their high season. In addition, a recent change to the prevailing wage rates has created a cloud of uncertainty for small businesses over their seasonal labor costs.”

On Thursday, June 13th, at 10:00 a.m., the Small Business Subcommittee on Contracting and Workforce, under the chairmanship of Rep. Richard Hanna (R-NY), will conduct a hearing titled Putting the Strategy in Sourcing: Challenges and Opportunities for Small Business Contractors. The purpose of the hearing is to review how recent changes to the Federal Strategic Sourcing Initiatives (FSSI) are affecting the competitive viability of small businesses.

“Contracting with small businesses injects more competition into the procurement process, which can produce better quality and more affordable products and services for the federal government,” said Subcommittee Chairman Hanna. “I am concerned that if changes to FSSI are not properly implemented, the government will promote administrative ease over small business viability, further reduce opportunities for small businesses to contract, and end up costing the taxpayers more over time.”
