Graves Announces Committee Schedule for Week of March 11

Washington, March 8, 2013 -

Subcommittee to Hold Hearing  on Reducing Regulatory Burden on Small Businesses

WASHINGTON, DC – The Small Business Committee, chaired by Rep. Sam Graves (R-MO), today announced the schedule for the week of March 11, 2013:

On Thursday, March 14, at 10:00 a.m. the Small Business Subcommittee on Investigations, Oversight and Regulations, under the chairmanship of Rep. David Schweikert (R-AZ), will conduct a hearing titled Regulating the Regulators – Reducing Burdens on Small Business. The hearing will take place in Room 2360 of the Rayburn House Office Building.

The Regulatory Flexibility Act (RFA) was enacted over 30 years ago to require federal agencies to take into account the impact of their regulations and cost on small businesses. If this impact is significant, agencies must consider less costly alternatives. Although agency compliance has improved over the intervening years, agencies have also gone to considerable lengths to avoid complying with the RFA. This hearing will examine the Administration’s compliance with the RFA, specifically by the EPA and OSHA, among others, and highlight issues to be addressed through future congressional activity.

“Federal agencies should be expected to analyze the economic impact of their regulations on businesses of all sizes, but in particular small businesses ill-equipped to handle oppressive red tape,” said subcommittee Chairman Schweikert. “If that impact is found to be outsized, it is in the best interest of all parties for alternatives that are less costly to be considered. Small businesses represent 99.7 percent of all employers and employ 49.1 percent of the private-sector labor force. The goal of this hearing is to shed light on regulatory practices that continue to put these job creators at a competitive disadvantage in the marketplace.”
