Committee on Small Business Hearing Highlights How Tax Hikes Crush Small Business Competitiveness

Committee Hearing Recap

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Chairman Roger Williams (R-TX) led a full Committee on Small Business hearing titled “Paying Their Fair Share: How Tax Hikes Crush the Competitiveness of Small Businesses.” Chairman Williams issued the following statement after concluding today’s hearing.

“As demonstrated in today’s hearing, our nation’s job creators need a tax code that works for them, not against,” said Chairman Williams. “My colleagues and I will always fight for lower taxes and less regulation in order to best support Main Street.”

Below are some key excerpts from today’s hearing:

“It’s my opinion that the federal government needs to get out of your way as much as possible to allow you to do your jobs, to allow you to provide for America, to allow you to provide for the world. And at this point, we are living in a world where we’re trying to punish our hardworking Americans every single day with more onerous government taxes,” said Rep. Hunt. “It’s my opinion that the federal government should be taxing you as little as possible because we are, we the people, this is our money, and we are investing it back into the government, and we should be allowing you to keep it so you can invest back into your businesses. That’s just an overall principle that I believe in, and I feel it differs from many of my friends in the left.”

“New York State has the dubious distinction of having the highest taxes in the nation at 12.47%. New York’s average income, sales, and property taxes are almost twice of what Florida’s are and is the catalyst for so many New Yorkers leaving for states like Florida. We also lead in another category; we lead in out-of-state migration. Said simply, more people leave our state than any other state in the nation. And unfortunately, President Biden’s proposed tax plan would only worsen New Yorkers’ tax burden and exacerbate my state’s loss of population. The President’s tax plan is riddled with policies which will further financially burden my constituents,” said Rep. LaLota.

Rep. Alford: “From what you have seen, do businesses typically just sit on a pile of money when they pay less taxes? Or what do they do with that money?” Mr. Warren Hudak:They invest in plant, property, and equipment. But it's not about a tax bill, we are preserving a way of life. A small business owner wakes up every single day, and sometimes he is the only one who thinks it's going to work out. Not the wife or the dog, they wake up and believe every single day...they have heart and soul. They are the backbone of America. We're not talking about taxes. We're talking about preserving a way of life on the Left and Right.”
