Weekly Update from Sam |
Dear Friends,
The first order of business in the 113th Congress is getting our fiscal house back in order. That’s not a one-step process; it’s a change in the way Washington has been doing business. Common sense spending restraint must be a constant priority for any successful effort to rein in our debt and deficits. That’s one reason a majority of the U.S. House believes the U.S. government must adopt a budget. House Republicans took an important step this week to ensure the Senate finally will pass a budget, after nearly four years of negligence.
Along with a responsible budget, action is required on the debt ceiling and sequestration spending cuts. Any long term increase in the debt ceiling must be tied directly to tangible spending restraint to reduce our nation's deficit. Sequestration spending cuts should be implemented in a sensible way that funds critical functions and preserves a strong national defense. House Republicans are committed to proactively managing the finances of this great country. The outcome must be a down payment on our nation’s debt crisis so our nation can thrive.
Sincerely,
Sam Graves
Chairman

News from Washington
|
On Wednesday, the House passed the No Budget, No Pay Act of 2013, which raises the debt ceiling for just three months to ensure the U.S. Senate passes a budget. If we're going to borrow more, the American people deserve to know how we plan to spend it and what our repayment plan is. The Senate last passed a budget on April 29, 2009, while the House has passed budgets every year during the Senate’s four-year absence from the nation’s fiscal debate.
House Republicans believe it is critical to seriously pursue solutions to the nation’s fiscal problems. In an effort to take a fiscal step forward, this legislation requires both houses of Congress to pass a budget by April 15, 2013. If one of the chambers doesn’t, they don’t get paid until they do. House Republicans are laying the groundwork for a serious budget effort to improve our country’s fiscal condition.
