Straight Talk: Americans Appreciate Small Businesses

Weekly Update from Sam
Dear Friends,

Congratulations to our nation’s small businesses. Small Business Saturday (the Saturday after Thanksgiving) was reportedly a growing success this year, as Americans showed their support by shopping at their favorite small, neighborhood shops. But it will take more than one day’s purchases to keep small businesses growing strong. And Congress still has work to do this year to create an environment where entrepreneurs and small firms can thrive free of excessive taxation and strangling debt.

This week, my colleagues in the House Republican Conference reelected me as Chairman of the Committee on Small Business for the upcoming 113th Congress, based upon the recommendation of the House Republican Steering Committee.  I deeply appreciate the opportunity to serve as Chairman, and the confidence my colleagues have placed in me. With the other Members of the Committee, I look forward to another productive two years, and getting started on our new agenda in January.

News from Washington

On Tuesday, the House passed the Clothe a Homeless Hero Act, H.R. 6328, which allows the Veterans Administration to work with TSA and other agencies to distribute lost clothing collected at airports to homeless veterans in need.

On Friday, the House voted 245-139 to pass the STEM Jobs Act, H.R. 6429, which allows employers to fill their talent needs with foreign graduates of U.S. universities with advanced degrees in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) to strengthen American job creation and economic growth. These bills now await action by the Senate.

Small Business Saturday
Small Business Saturday isn’t as big as Black Friday yet, the noted shopping day following Thanksgiving, but it is gaining attention. According to a survey by the NFIB and American Express, Americans spent about $5.5 billion at small businesses last Saturday, and that’s helpful news for our nation’s leading job creators. News reports gathered some great anecdotal evidence of what we already know: Americans strongly support and appreciate small businesses.
