House Committee on Small Business, Republicans
Straight Talk- Five Small Biz Contracting Bills One Step Closer to Enactment
Weekly Update from Sam
Dear Friends,

Our Committee continued its work this week to help level the playing field for small business contracting opportunities. On Thursday, our Committee passed five contracting bills that are now ready to be considered by the full House. These bills are the product of over 10 Committee hearings where we heard directly from small business owners about their frustrations with the federal procurement system.

With the federal government spending over half a trillion dollars on federal contracts each year (and $100 billion already spent in just the first three months of this year), we must ensure that not only do small businesses have just as much opportunity as their larger counterparts to compete, but that taxpayer dollars are used wisely and efficiently. The bills passed by our Committee earlier this month will help accomplish this.

In other news this week, today marks the second anniversary of ObamaCare. Sadly, what we knew and what small businesses feared from the beginning has proven to be true— the onslaught of employer mandates and taxes have hindered small business growth and their ability to hire employees. That is why yesterday House Republicans took another step— 26 total to date— to dismantle and defund the law by repealing the health care rationing board through H.R. 5.

It is steps like these that will remove Washington roadblocks and help get us back on the road to recovery.

As mentioned above, on Thursday, the Committee passed five small business contracting bills during a full Committee markup. Each of the contracting bills will ensure that first and foremost, taxpayer dollars are used wisely and are protected from fraud. They will also make sure programs intended to help small businesses deliver results and don’t inadvertently harm the very business they are supposed to help.

News From Washington

On Thursday, the House passed the Protecting Access to Healthcare (PATH) Act (H.R. 5) by a vote of 223-181. This legislation would repeal the Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB) created by the health care law. The IPAB is a board of 15 unelected bureaucrats with the power to make cost-cutting decisions that restrict access to health care for Medicare beneficiaries without judicial or administrative review.
