House Committee on Small Business, Republicans

Straight Talk: Listening to Small Businesses

Weekly Update from Sam
Dear Friends,

The Small Business Committee’s focus is how to help the nation’s 28 million small businesses grow and create jobs. We focus specifically on the federal policies affecting their ability to do so. In my time as Chairman, we’ve created more opportunities for small businesses to tell us about their challenges and solutions, and to make sure the voices of small businesses are heard clearly in Congress and throughout the federal government.

One way we do that is through regular testimony in our hearings from small business owners and industry representatives. Any small business owner can also be heard through our Small Biz Open Mic feature on the Committee’s website. Here, small businesses can have input on issues of their choice, or respond to questions from the Committee about current small business topics.

We also work to inform small businesses about regulations that affect them through a website we started 18 months ago called Small Biz Reg Watch. Here, we alert small firms about pending rules so that they can have their say to the federal agencies while those proposed regulations are still in the pipeline.

It’s a privilege to work with the members of the Committee on Small Business who bring a wide array of business knowledge and life experiences to the Committee’s work, and when they hear first-hand the concerns of small businesses in the real world, they understand and stand ready to help. We know that a stronger economic recovery is only possible when small businesses are growing to their full potential and optimistic about their futures.

Sincerely,

News from Washington

On Wednesday, the House and Senate named a bicameral conference committee to reconcile the differences between the House and Senate versions of legislation that will help veterans have timely access to the care they need and reform the Department of Veterans Affairs. In an unfolding scandal, the VA’s backlog has kept veterans across the country waiting for care, and some deaths have been linked to delayed care. The House passed the Veterans Access to Care Act (H.R. 4810) on June 10, and the Senate passed a similar bill the next day.

On Friday, the House passed the Department of Defense Appropriations Act, 2015 (H.R. 4870), which funds the Department of Defense for the next fiscal year at $491 billion. The legislation provides funds for military readiness, national security operations overseas and in the United States, and health and quality of life programs for the troops.
